Where to Start Building a Good Foundation in Physics

Physics is the study of matter and its motion through space and time to understand how the world works all around us, such as Newton’s laws of gravity and Einstein’s theory of relativity.

In schools, physics is referred to as the science subject with a lot of formulas and calculations — while it is true that physics and mathematics are closely related. To achieve good grades and make your hold on the application of physics concepts, you first need to establish a strong foundation.

Improve Your Mathematical Skills

You often heard that math is the language of physics. While you don’t need to be a mathematical genius, you just need a certain level of proficiency in math. Sharpening your math skills will increase your skills to tackle various formulas, so you can focus on solving the physics aspect of the problem and stop worrying about whether you did the equation correctly.

Understand Basic Theories

Physics centers around basic theories upon which whole physics is developed. Most of the questions test your understanding of one or more of these basic theories, and how they interact with each other. If you learn how equations are derived from these theories, you can form a clear picture of how they work and become a better problem solver.

Be Familiar with Physics Constants

In Physics, there are a lot of constants having values that don’t change regardless of how they are used. For example, gravity on earth is always 9.81 metres/second2, speed of light is always 3 x 108 meters/second. Have or make a table and memorise the most frequently-used constants so you don’t have to worry about recalling them during an exam.

Be Familiar with Basic Equations

Equations are core of the Physics. You can’t solve any physics question without equations. Basic equations of physics such as “Force = Mass x Acceleration” and many more are the base on which complex equations are built on. By understanding the basic equations and knowing them well, you are better equipped to recognise situations where they can be used. As a bonus, you will be able to quickly grasp more complex equations because you already have an underlying understanding of what makes them work!

Practice Consistently and Get Help When Needed

Like all things, mastery is achieved through constant practice. It’s better to consistently practice physics for an hour every day rather than trying to cram everything in one sitting. Seek out to your teacher or classmates who know the subject better than you, a different perspective could just be the boost you need to solve a problem.
